speech recognition

Postby polly » Sun Mar 28, 2004 8:59 pm

Hi!
I've just installed the MS speech recognition engine.
How can I use it with Sylvie?

Thanks

If you're talking about this one:
http://www.microsoft.com/msagent/downloads/user.asp#sr
It probably doesn't do what you think. It's not a speech recognition engine in the way most people think of it. It's really a command recognition system. It's designed to recognize a short list of commands that the MS Agent Character builders can designate, it doesn't take dictation like other systems. We didn't build in any of these commands because the list would end up looking like this: hide, show, smile, frown, and maybe a couple more. It's not really worth the extra download for such little functionality.

We are very interested in testing out Verbots with a full blown speech recognition system like Dragon NaturallySpeaking. If anyone has this and can try it out, let us know how it works for you.

Dragon 6 works fine, in normal mode, and once you've trained the hell out of the program.

Just set the Auto enter timer in verbot to about 5 to 7 secs.

Just remember that Dragon looks for predictable text patterns, which chatting is anything but!!! hence all the extra training!

All the Dragon commmands still work inside Verbot too.

Dragon Speech Recognition

Postby Quixote » Fri Jul 09, 2004 8:00 pm

Doesn't the auto enter interfere with the Verbot's responses? I mean I haven't tried it, but would it not wonder why you are entering empty inputs?
also, how would the CPU load be affected by hitting enter every 5 seconds regardless of whether or not you are entering inputs? I very interested in solutions to using Dragon Naturally Speaking with Verbot, as I plan to do this very soon using a wireless bluetooth microphone.

Actually, it's not every 5 sec. It's after you've started typing something, and then you give it 5 (or whatever you configure) sec. of inactivity. You can try it out when typing.

Office XP

Postby penguin » Sun Aug 01, 2004 1:42 am

hey everyone, I'm new to this forum but have been dabbling in chatterbots like ALICE, ALAN, HAL and the like for some time now. My question is: Office XP comes with a speech recognition program that dictates as well as does voice commands. Once you train it, it can average out at about a %95 accuracy rate. I've been using it in Word and it does very well. Has anyone tried this with verbot? Please let me know. Thanks.

Hi Penguin...and everyone else.

I just recently started playing with Verbot and Office XP's Speech recognition as well. I'm impressed. However, I have not yet been able to get Office's speech recognition to work with anything other than Office programs (not even Notepad) despite allowing "Extended support of advanced text services to all programs" in the Language toolbar options.

I'm sure I'm missing some update or something.

I'd love to get this working with Verbot...I'll be happy to share what I learn. And if anybody has any advice about how to make Msft's Speech Recognition work with other programs I'd very much appreciate it.

Thanks!
Keri

I think, and this is just speculation, that if it won't work in notepad, it won't work in Verbot. :( At least for now.

It's working!

Postby keriw » Tue Aug 17, 2004 6:23 pm

Hi Penguin and Aaron...

I've got Microsoft's speech engine working with Verbot!

I think the problem was that I had several language services installed and they were interfering with the speech recognition.

Accuracy isn't good, but I haven't spent much time training the speech profile.

This is fun!

Keri

Great job keriw!

Can you post a detailed set of instructions/requirements for it? I think a lot of people would like to use speech recognition, even if it isn't very good.

Thanks.

Hi Aaron.

Sure! This is what I've learned...

The speech recognition engine comes built in to XP, but is not necessarily installed. Here's how to do that:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... -us;306537

Once you have the engine installed you need to tell Windows to allow it to work with programs other than Office...Go to Control Panel | Regional and Language Options | Languages | Details | Advanced and enable "Extend support of advanced text services to all programs". Click Apply and you will probably need to reboot.

The engine loads up a little toolbar with buttons for Dictation (for entering text), Voice Command (for accessing File | Open and other menu commands) and Speak (I don't know what that does yet). The Voice Commands appear to only work with Office XP programs. But the Dication works for Verbot, Messenger and others. To turn off/on the voice rec click the "Microphone" button.

Test it in Word first. Then try something like Wordpad, Messenger, or Verbot. (I highly recommend a headset microphone combo. If you have speakers and a built in mic like I do your programs will talk to themselves - which is pretty funny!)

The first time I tried the speech engine it didn't work and I think it's because I have international clients and frequently change my Regional settings to different languages. When you do this in XP it keeps all of those different settings in memory and seems to interfere with the voice rec. If you have ever changed your language settings do this....go to Control Panel | Regional and Language Settings | Languages | Details and look at the "Installed Services". Remove any languages that are not English. You might need to reboot again.

Train your speech profile often. Control Panel | Speech | Train Profile. It appears that the more you do this the better the recognition.

Anyway...I hope this works for folks.

Have fun!
Keri

Thanks Keriw for the help.
I just bought and downloaded the standard edition and have setup my microphone and speakers and have had my first (short) conversation. It worked well. Look forward to a lot of fun in the future. :D
Works fine with Microsoft speech recognitions engine. got a bit of training to do though :P

OK, I have my Bluetooth USB adapter and I have my Bluetooth headset. Dragon Naturally speaking is great, but I've aquired the software through a friend's dad who is a medical professional that bought a newer version and I have no manual. Does anyone know how to send the dictated text to Verbot or any other programs aside from the Dragon Pad? Thanks guys.
